wilwheaton:

Editor’s Note: A few weeks ago our message board and general inbox were bombarded with demands we address something called the “GamerGate Scandal”, posts written with the urgency and rage one would associate with, say, discovering that Chipotle burritos are made entirely from the meat of human babies. It’s apparently a big deal in some circles, so we followed the links and read the piles of data presented, and had to stop and take a deep breath just to grasp it all. “Gentlemen,” we said amid the stunned silence, “do you realize that if what they’re saying is true, then this is still the most pointless fucking bullshit anyone has ever forced us to read?”

The “scandal” turned out to be an excuse for an Internet harassment campaign against a random indie game developer who, like many such targets, was a female and a feminist.

It was all sparked by a single forum post from a jilted ex-boyfriend, but the ensuing outrage was so fierce and relentless that the story made it all the way to The New Yorker. This kind of spontaneous shitstorm is depressingly common these days, so we reached out to Zoe Quinn to see what it’s like to be the Internet’s Most Hated Person (well, for a couple of weeks, anyway). Here’s what she told us…

Bold emphasis = mine.

In his spare time, Peter Parker has taken to making custom action figures of all of the superheroes he interacts with as Spider-Man. from the Thing to Squirrel Girl, and even Sandman once he reformed. He gives each figure to its’ respective hero as a gift, with the only condition being that he or she take a picture with it for his portfolio. (Captain Marvel found hers awesome, and making it with his own hands earned Spidey a kiss.) To date, the only one to dislike his figure was Iron Man, because the armor he based it on was 26 generations ago. Tony now has a standing order for an updated figure every six months.

I love this one!Aside: I knew a fella who made custom action figures of young players on the local junior hockey team. The kids who received the action figure were thrilled to bits!

Protective clothing that actually protects is such a novel idea.

Today’s the day. The day you help save the internet from being ruined.

Ready?

Yes, you are, and we’re ready to help you.

(Long story short: The FCC is about to make a critical decision as to whether or not internet service providers have to treat all traffic equally. If they choose wrong, then the internet where anyone can start a website for any reason at all, the internet that’s been so momentous, funny, weird, and surprising—that internet could cease to exist. Here’s your chance to preserve a beautiful thing.)

PLEASE.

Please do it. This one is important. You may not think YOU are important (you are, by the way) but if your representatives know that you care about how they vote, and if you call, and the person before you calls, and the person after you calls… then they vote to keep the internet the way it is.

DOOOO ITTTTTTTT (said in the reassuring voice of the thing under your bed when you were tiny)

Clint has given each Avenger a name in sign language.  Thor is the letter ‘T’ in the motion of a hammer.  Steve is a salute with an “R”. Hulk is an “H” over the bicep, but Bruce is the sign for doctor followed by the letter “B”.  Natasha is an “N” being shot from his other wrist like a widow bite. His own name is a “C” being drawn back like a bow.  Stark is an “S” taking flight, unless Barton is mad at him, then he fingerspells “A.S.” for Anthony Stark, but accidentally on purpose adds a second “S”.
